About ISO certification

ISO certification is increasingly important for businesses in Qatar. ISO stands for the International Organization for Standardization, founded in 1947; its first quality management standard, ISO 9001, was published in 1987 and has grown steadily in use since. Companies that achieve ISO certification show that their products, services, and processes meet internationally recognized requirements – helping ensure customer satisfaction and meeting expected technical specifications.

ISO certification has become a practical measure of quality assurance: it requires organizations to meet industry standards and customer expectations, which helps them identify their strengths and gaps and compete as industry leaders. In a market where Qatari firms compete with global players, improving your own systems through certification is one of the clearest ways to stand out.

Common ISO certification schemes

How ISO certification works?

Standards body – ISO. ISO is the worldwide body that develops international standards, based in Geneva with over 160 member countries. It is the world’s largest developer of voluntary international standards – but ISO itself does not certify organizations.

Accreditation bodies. These are government, semi-government, or non-profit organizations that accredit certification bodies against ISO/IEC 17021 (and related standards), recognizing them as competent to audit and issue ISO certification.

Certification bodies. Authorized (accredited) to audit organizations and issue ISO certificates. A credibly accredited certificate gives your customers confidence and helps you win new business and market share.

ISO standards and their focus areas (current versions)

ISO 9001:2015 – Quality Management. Drives customer satisfaction through better products and services; helps increase productivity, reduce waste, and improve profitability. (A revised edition is expected around 2026.)

ISO 14001:2026 – Environmental Management. Helps conserve resources, improve operational efficiency, and prevent environmental harm. The 2026 edition was published in April 2026; certified organizations have a transition period (to 2029) to move from ISO 14001:2015.

ISO 22000:2018 – Food Safety Management. Aims to prevent food safety hazards across the supply chain; relevant to any business involved in producing or transporting food.

ISO 50001:2018 – Energy Management. Helps organizations meet energy goals, cut carbon emissions, raise energy efficiency, and reduce waste.

ISO 13485:2016 – Medical Devices Quality Management. A risk-based standard for medical device manufacturers and suppliers to meet customer and regulatory requirements.

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 – Information Security Management. Helps prevent unauthorized access, data loss, outages, and misuse through a structured information security management system (the 2022 edition has 93 Annex A controls).

ISO/TS 29001 – Quality Management for the oil, gas, and petrochemical sector. Built on ISO 9001 with sector-specific requirements for supply chains in this industry – highly relevant to Qatar’s energy sector.

ISO 39001:2012 – Road Traffic Safety Management. Helps reduce road-traffic deaths and injuries through a management-system approach – useful for fleets and transport operators.

ISO 37001:2016 – Anti-Bribery Management. Provides guidance to prevent, detect, and address bribery, reducing legal and reputational risk.

ISO 15189:2022 – Medical Laboratories. Focuses on quality and competence in medical laboratories for better, safer patient care.

The general ISO certification process

  1. Implementation – build your management system to the standard’s requirements (often 6-9 months, depending on readiness)
  2. Choose a certification body – ideally one with recognized accreditation
  3. Compliance assessment – a project plan defines activities, resources, deadlines, and responsibilities
  4. Certification audit and registration – on a successful audit, your certificate is issued
  5. Surveillance and renewal – certificates are valid for three years, with annual surveillance audits and recertification at the end of the cycle.
